Consider the pressure we feel when we leave something incomplete. It's shown in numerous studies that without competition our nervous system has a lot of unfulfilled energy running around our nervous system - leads to major psych problems - insomnia, anxiety, depression, low energy etc.
Because of this I think the major obstacle is our own psychological defense system that stops us from taking on or even starting 'big' tasks which always runs the risk of yet ANOTHER activity that will remain incomplete.
This is why breaking tasks down and applying the 9 minute rule is so powerful.
