In my opinion the best things are (not necessarily in order)

Think and Grow Rich
What to say when you talk to yourself
The Power of your Subconscious Mind

with these three you can pretty much incorporate whatever you want into your life without becoming a self-help junkie.

Ive probably read as much stuff as anyone else on this forum and a lot of books have interesting bits and pieces here and there but the whole idea of getting leverage against your subconscious mind is simply the best. I think NLP can be useful, having said that if you listen to how some successful people like Gene Simmons, Donald Trump etc. talk they often talk themselves up a lot (self-promotion even to themselves)....plus Bruce Lee used auto-suggestion what more do you need :). I know the NLP technology and think it can be useful but Im still not convinced it is as effective and easy to do regularly. Also from my experience people can react differently to things like Scrooge Patterns, Anchoring, Swish Patterns etc.

Ive read Dale Carnegie's books in the past (when I was 8 to be precise) and I know this may seem contentious but as a general rule I believe they will make you a likeable guy but not someone that people are desperate to hang around with. You will be a nice guy but not necessarily an extremely popular guy.

David DeAngelo's stuff is good but notice how he goes on with a lot of theory and then often comes back to this idea of inner game being the most important aspect. The books i listed above were all recommended by him to change your inner game and if you watch his programes they are motivational but dont always directly give the means to change. For example the Sean guy on cocky comedy is inspiring but basically tells you to be more confident, find yourself attractive, get rid of your excuses etc. Then we have things like Mystery Method which is a means to 'fake it till you make it' but you really can make it if you use the stuff above.

My 2 cents :)

To my post dated august I have to add another great book that I have recently read:
The success system that never fails by W. Clement Stone.
It's inspiring and practical at the same time.
I'm using it daily to my life and I think it's really a great book.
