What's your favorite negotiation tactics?

Post by qnn on Fri Sep 05, 2008 7:59 pm

I am sure that everybody has had to negotiate over something in their life. I'd like to hear opinions of people who have to do it daily basis.

I personally like to be very carefree and willing to walk away. I have found that it will work for me most effectively. Sometimes, when I am really frustrated with somebody, and truly blow them away, they still come back with a better offer. It's very suprising. Sometimes I also like lawyering techniques...

So, what's your best tool or tactics Any examples....

Walking away is not always an option though. :!:

Anyways what I do is simple: People have different models of reality. Different beliefs and values. I try to express what I seek subtly in terms of what is important to them too. Once they are convinced that I am there to help them, then they generally play along rather nicely.
You have to persist with some and have a fairly high degree of embarrassment tolerance sometimes.
And yes mostly I do have their best interests in mind ( and it shows through my ways in a subtle manner)

Kevin hogan is awesome in negotiation and persuasion. Do read his stuff.

i agree with vibra, negotiation is all about give and take. ideally you place yourself from the perspective of the people with whom you are negotiating and try to see it from their side. See in what way they can profit from your solution and give it to them that way. Make them realize how much they will gain from what you propose and you will always win. Avoid making into a contest, in other words, do not try to prove them wrong as no one wants to be wrong. Allow them to save face while agreeing to your proposition. there are many books out there on negotiating, look up Gitomer's Little Green Book of Getting your way. It is a pretty easy read and covers most of the basic subjects on negotiation.
