Learning Languages?

Post by HaKa on Fri Jun 06, 2008 3:41 pm

Hey!

How do you learn a new language

I am trying the Birkenbihl method now.. which basically consists of:

a) hearing the language spoken slowly in fore- and background

b) doing some reading / speaking

It is trying to teach you the structure of a language and thinking in that language, rather than translating it exactly.

I will tell you how good it works..

Other courses I tried, like Pimsleur or many computer based courses, I didnt find all that great.

What is your opinion

The best way it's to study...like at school :P But you can also begin learning some words and the basic grammar and than...read, see video with subs...you can try "Rosetta stone" that is only reading, speaking, listening, whithout grammar... :)

I don't have a Birkenbihl course but I used her approach (I've read about it in the past).
It's good for starters but sooner or later you need to create solid grammar structures in your mind.
The progression: a) hearing; b) speaking; c)reading; d) writing; is useful and I can tell you that there are results. :D
Unfortunately sooner or later it's necessary to develop a confidence with grammar and structures to compose articulated phrases and concepts.

Depending on what purpose you study for and what your goals are, I can recommend different approaches:

- The Rosetta Stone
- Pimsleur
- Tim Ferriss' method of learning languages very fast

If you not only wish to be able to learn new languages but want to develop your memory and learning ability in general, you might want to have a look at:

- The School of Phenomenal Memory by Ruslan Mescerjakov.

Best,

u.

hay guys, i learned Spanish by learning to read and spell it first. made it easy for me since i tend to want to know the dynamics of things first. this might help in some small way
