Simple self-conditioning.
Every time you catch yourself thinking about what other people could or do think about you just mentally say to yourself "It doesn't matter I don't care what others think". Takes a long time but if you do it consistently (and really do what you worried about regardless of what others might think) it just kind of sticks.
It's basically a long and tedious brute-force attack on your brain. Every time you catch yourself thinking something stupid just consciously think whatever else you'd like to think in that situation.
Some day it will stick and you won't even start thinking about whatever shit you were used to think.

You can also do small things that embarrass you, and when you see in next few days you survived, do things that embarrass you a bit more and so on ... that way you will show yourself that it really does not matter what people think of you, and you will understand it internally, instead of just on intellectual level.
Balance I also agree with what you said, and it is definately effective.
Try doing a combination of the two. When you see you survived after something embarrasing happened, that nothing really changed, or if it did - again you survived and handeld it, you will feel liberated !

I know this is an old post, what came to mind was "what do you think when you think of others?"
Do you judge them? Watch your thoughts on this, if you catch yourself judging what others are being, or doing or what they have then these thoughts are only the mirror of your 'what do others think of me?' thoughts.
Become non-judgmental and you'll find that you don't think of them being judgmental either... no more caring what others think.... voila.
I've expanded on this in my blog...
