How do you know? :?
I can absolutely relate to why people start believing something in that direction.
I did once - and it was kind of comforting and maybe even empowering.
But there is absolutely nothing out there to back it up - except the word of other people...

When people say they "believe in an afterlife" - what they do is that they actually believe or trust in people who told them that there is one and maybe even that it looks a certain way.

But one should always consider that even "good people" can be full of sh*t.
In fact most people actually are - and they are not reluctant when it comes to letting it out.

I am always amazed about how people have so much to say about something they actually don't know anything about.
(Not just religion and spirituality but also politics and many, many other topics.)

How do i know personally? Because i have experienced things that have proven to me, that my beliefs hold true. Perhaps some people who believe in spirituality at that level have not experienced anything to back up their beliefs, but perhaps they have? Its a little presumptuous to judge the masses on their beliefs based on your own opinion is it not? I hear what you are saying though, everybody has an opinion and they are almost always ready to share it with anyone and everyone who will listen. I cant speak for all people and their beliefs, but personally, i always take everything for checking. I do however, think that for those who have not yet been aware of their spiritual experiences, believing in the teachings of highly developed spiritual souls such as Buddha is a much better option than believing in random internet folk. Dont you?
