How to generate traffic on to my website?

Post by RUPIPANAICH on Mon Jan 18, 2010 10:04 pm

Hello,
I am new to this site, and am not really sure how this works. I am looking for some ways in which i can generate traffic on to my website. This site is currently under construction soon to be up and running.
Its greared towards students and their post secondary needs. My concern is, i am not a very social person and not able to approach people for help. Question is, how do i achieve my goal of people, especially students, visiting my site?
If anyone can help me with ideas and provide me with how they managed to do similar with their sites...would be really hlepful.

Thank you in advance.

Interesting question, i have 5 blogs, 1 small site and 1 forum, here is my experience:

You can get traffic from 4 major sources:
1. Commercial (like google adwords) but it's very expensive and since you got nothing to sell it ain't worth it!
2. Affiliates-> people that already have traffic and that are willing to link to you if you in return link to them like link exchange -> It's free and remember that it's a number game, contact as many people and see who will accept
3. Organic search -> you could do this by adding google code on your page for the site to be indexed faster but remember you need to have some knowledge of keywords, a seo friendly website and of course a little traffic for google to see that your site matters -> This is one of the best sources but it takes a lot of time or/and a lot of traffic already
4. Social sites -> Be active on forums and groups in your niche, give value first then you could link to your site -> it's very delicate and you could be seen as a spammer! Also use other social media like facebook, twitter, youtube, anything you can!

The most important aspect is for your site to be appealing for the user to return, also try not to worry about feedback, you probably wont get to much, i got like 160 visits and no comments, it's not a god feeling but who can blame them, today the average internet user is "browse only", they wont care about your hard work enough to give feedback.

I don't have much time right now since i have exams but i'll surely never stop until I SUCCEED! and i will share my experience, if anybody is interested of course.
Sorry about my attitude in the last lines but i can't lie, you will find a lot of obstacles that you must find creative solutions to them and critics like "spammer!", but you must have discipline and carry on with your plan! :!:

It really depends on who are your customers and if you have any money to spend on traffic. Are you selling courses or do you want to have traffic so you can sell advertising space?

One of the simplest ways to start without any ad budget would be to write articles and submit them to article directories. This will get you some traffic but it will also get you backlinks to your website. Backlinks improve your ranking in the search engines.

If you have some money to spend then you could advertise on Google Adwords although it is expensive. Another avenue is Facebook. It can cost about 1/10 of what Google Adwords charges and the traffic is much more targeted.

Regardless of which method you choose you need to know what keywords you are trying to target. Go to google and type in "google adwords keyword tool". It's a free tool that will help you determine your competition and how many searches a particular keyword gets each month. Just remember the more focused you are, the more targeted your traffic. The keyword "lose weight" gets a ton of searches but many are just lookers but "lose weight for a wedding" is much more targeted and these people are more likely to buy than look.

If you need more help let me know.
