This is a good question.

There is no magic formula but there are a few good standard procedures.

The best procedure is to talk to the prospect's need and not yours. It's not relevant what it does for you - it's important what it does for him.

However, that's basic salesmanship.

In order to increase sales, I have a few suggestions:
-> Keep an organized CRM. I suggest Highrise from 37 signals. Know what every client bought, when, what he thinks of it.
-> Try to up-sell. Up-selling in the first minutes after the first sale increase your chance for a second sale by 75%.
-> Try to use affiliates. If you don't have a product of your own to sell, just sell one from someone else for a commission.
-> Send them a "Thank you letter" personally for every product. Give it your signature (even if it's a copy).
-> Send surveys to learn about their likes and dislikes and plan your next marketing campaign accordingly.
-> Have good customer support. Some businesses (like Zappos) focused entirely on this as their sales point. They were more expensive than the competition but they had the best CS.

And a few thousands more :). I think a better, specific question would get a set of better answers.
