Personally, I don't think there's the highest earning job out there that you can get a hold of.
However, the most significant thing that you should worry about is the highest 'best' job. It's the job that you enjoy most and you want to be sucessful at. if you're sucessful at the job you do, then probably to you, that's probably considered the highest paying job EVER because your in love with it!

I don't think there is a single job that can be identified as "highest paying job".
I would say that generally, highest paying jobs have the quality of high specialization.
Choose a single area and become an expert in that field.
Build a reputation and I think that you can earn more than others professionals that offer a more generalized service.
Napoleon Hill suggested in his book "think and grow rich" to acquire a specialized knowledge.
General knowledge is good but it doesn't give you the ability to earn a lot.
The ideal is to monetize your knowledge and the best way you can do it, is to become a very good specialist in your field.
Also sportsmen are specialists, each one of his own discipline.
I think that this is the main aspect you need to have a high payed job. :)

I think that working for yourself ultimately is the highest paying job. If you look at it from an economics point of view a firm cannot pay you as much as your work is worth except if it is a perfectly competitive industry (which it never is)...whereas if you are paying yourself then you can pay yourself what your labour earns.

In a job you can only move forward as fast as your employers let you and as fast as a position opens up, if you are your own boss then you move forward as fast as your skill lets you.

Probably less security tho.
