Finding and cultivating ambitions

Post by whipy on Wed Sep 09, 2009 9:29 pm

Hey guys and gals,

I'm new here, and I feel I need some help. I'll try and keep my story as concise as possible... I'm 27 and I've got a Master's degree in Translation. Right now there is a financial crisis going on in my country (well, not just in my country), and I can't seem to find a job. I've been jobless for almost a year now, and it feels like the walls are closing in on me more and more each day.

I've always been a bit of a lazy person, I'll be the first to admit it... Path of least resistance, that sort of thing. I guess I've always been this way... Even from early childhood, my parents didn't ever expect me to help out in the house or do the dishes, they never pushed me in any way... Not that I blame them for my current state or my laziness, I have fantastic parents... But still, maybe if, you know?

I have a lot of hobbies, like playing the guitar, playing pool as a competitive sport, ... I've had a lot of free time this past year, so I guess I could have worked on my songwriting, on maintaining my languages, practicing for matches etc. Instead I can't get myself to commit to anything. I have come to the conclusion that probably there's passion missing in my life. Passion about something, ANYTHING! Something to drive me, to keep me motivated. I've thought about this to no end, but I can't really find anything about which I can say "I'm going to give it my all, and never stop until I reach my goal".

One of my problems is - and I bet a lot of people feel this way at some point or another - that I really don't excel at anything. I'm above average in most things, but mostly I feel like I'd rather suck at everything but excel at one thing (transcending the grey masses, if you will :P ). Don't get me wrong, I'm fully aware that without hard work, nobody can achieve greatness. It's just that I can't seem to find my ambition(s) or my goal(s) in life. I'm fed up with wasting my days trying to figure something out, waiting for something to fall in my lap.

Therefore, my questions to you all are:

1. what are your thoughts/comments/criticisms about all this (only constructive criticism please)
2. what's a good place to start (book, audio, dvd) for me to find an ambition in life and how to cultivate it

Thanks in advance!

Whipy, If you don't try your best at what you have already it will be difficult for you to achieve anything else that may come your way.
Look at you... You have a Master's degree!
You can tap into the universe, you love music!
You play pool as a competitive sport!
So many people don't have not even close at what you have achieved so far. By having those three subjects in your life tells me you have a lot of greatness in you.
My advice to you is:
Love what you have already, and increase that love more and more, become a better translator, a better musician, a better player!
You will be amazed how the future will just fall on your lap.
Don't look anywhere else, you already have it!
