Expressing ideas and understanding people?

I want to be a great leader. However, now I am a terrible leader. I often express my idea bad or misunderstand my partners, that make my communication very clumsy and even stupid.
Please give me some advices, what should I do to improve my communication skill? What book should I read?

There are lots of excellent stuff in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) for those who want to master the fine art of leadership and human comprehension.

The book that helped me the most was ''The Structure of Magic'' of Bandler and Grinder. This is a deep and often complicated book, and you have to make its reading inseparable from the practice itself. But it gives you an amazing idea of how the dynamic of speech reveals what people are really thinking (even if they themselves are unaware of it!).

It is essencially a Therapeutic book, written by and to ''people-helpers'', but aren't real leaders a strange kind of social therapeut? I do think so, and that is why Leadership is also one of my favorites traits to develop. It is so rewarding.

It also contains amazing insights about Body Languange, Voice Tonality, Eye Patterns and, of course, the Congruence of all of them.

If you are really commited with your dream. I believe this is a must have, althought you may take it easy and simply buy one of NLP introduction. That is fine too.

I am currently working on my leadership skills as well mate, here is what i discovered:

Step 1:
Get in great state, envision and believe that you are a great leader, feel competent.

Step 2:
Work on your:
+Voice (anything related to it, as tone, volume, pitch, pausing)
+Body posture
+Diaphragmatic breathing
+Gestures
+Facial expressions
+"interesting factor"
+...
Also study leaders you will want to be like, it helps if you have friends that have better leader qualities than you, like i have. I learned and will learn a lot from him.
To see your progress video tape yourself, like i do. Even if it seems strange, it's only practice, you would be ashamed if you practiced a sport by yourself would it? This is no different, always try to improve little by little, and act as you were delivering it to a lot of people, so when you will actually have to act for real, you will be amazing!

As for materials, mostly anything related to public speaking will do, i'll try to make a list.
