Do you chase pleasure or avoid pain?

Post by BillGold on Wed Sep 05, 2007 8:15 pm

We are all programed to chase pleasure or avoid pain,
we move towards things which we like or we move away from that which we don't like.

Everyone does one or the other. I move away from pain.
For example the deadline, the extra weight I have put on,
the pain of not having the cash I want to get something is more of a motivator to me than my goal board!

What motivates you, chasing pleasure or moving away from pain
Go on, be honest!
If you know the answer, you have the key to your own success.

i am motivated by pleasure, i always see my self living the life i always dreamed (Healthy, having the wife i desire, great relationships, richness, ...) , i want to be the best at everything i do :)

And to be honest i do live most of it except for my loving wife and richness, but i'm working on those: learning about girls and i'm now an investor, i also seek other opportunities for wealth

I like developing_success's answer. Honestly, for myself, I'd have to say I have ignorantly been motivated more to avoid pain. However, I am actually reframing that now toward pursuing the positive and not acting to avoid pain as my primary motivation.

Nurture plays a role in how we behave regarding this question. Everything from how we are disciplined and rewarded growing up to the modeling in our homes. Many are not brought along and so don't intuitively have the behavioral attributes that make for VIP success. It's unfortunate but that certainly can be changed around through a combination of the right attitude and exposure to the right information.

its not quite that simple, even if NLP suggests it is.

You have to discover within yourself what pain you move from. For me, pain comes through people succeeding in areas I am not.

So when I wake up I think : I have to go and absolutely succeed today or I risk letting her win.

If all pain were equal, saying : I have to get up today or I will be late for work then get shouted at by my boss

So discover what you really really don't want to happen, then link everything to that to motivate you

Seems to be working for me. I just paid for my first ferrari (355 !) so am starting to really become successful
